Flatbreads can make amazing appetizers and very simple to prepare. We had our first experience with an amazing with mushroom and meat flatbread at a steakhouse in Bahrain. This egged me on to make a version of this different but extremely flavorful flatbread, Caramelized Onion, Apple & Bacon Flatbread.
Adding slices of Apple and Caramelized onions just blew this flatbread recipe out of this world. Do not miss preparing this recipe.
To prepare a Vegetarian version of the same, substitute the Bacon with Crumbled Goat Cheese or Feta Cheese.

Caramelized Onion, Apple & Bacon Flatbread
Ingredients
Dough
- 2 to 2⅓ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
- 1 ½ tsp sugar
- ¾ tsp salt
- 4 tbsp olive oil + additional
- ¾ cup warm water
Flatbread
- 3 thick-cut bacon roughly torn into pieces
- 200 grams ball pizza dough
- ½ medium red-skinned apple cored and thinly sliced
- 5 tbsp Marinara
- ½ cup Mozzarella cheese
- 1 tbsp chilli flakes
- 2 tbsp Olive oil
Instructions
Preparing the dough
- Take a small bowl, add sugar to 1/3 cup of warm water. Dissolve the yeast. Wait for around 10 minutes for the yeast to bloom.
- In a large bowl, add all the remaining ingredients of the dough. Make a well in the center and add the yeast. Knead in a smooth dough and keep it aside for 2 hours to double in size.
Assembling and Baking
- Preheat the oven to 180°C.
- Take a medium skillet and heat in on medium heat. Place the bacon on the skillet and cook until fat is released and it is lightly browned. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel–lined plate to drain the excess fat.
- Roll out the dough to a 12-inch rectangle flat bread. Transfer it to a baking sheet.
- Brush the dough lightly with some Olive oil, especially the edges of the flatbread. Spread the marinara and add mozzarella cheese. Arrange the apple slices on top in a single layer.
- Place the bacon pieces on the side of the apple slices.
- Transfer the pizza to the oven and bake for about 10 mins until the crust is golden and the cheese has brown spots.
- Remove the flatbread from the oven. Top with some chilli flakes. You can also drizzle maple syrup; slice and enjoy.
